What Are Blackheads and How Do I Remove Them?
If you are suffering from acne or other skin problems, you will sooner or later discover blackheads somewhere on your face. Almost anyone has had blackheads at some point. Let’s take a look at what causes blackheads and how they form on the skin. Next we take a look at how you can remove them and most importantly what you can do to prevent them from forming again in the future.
What Are Blackheads? Blackheads form when the oil producing glands in the skin produce too much oil and it collects in a skin pore. As the oil begins to harden, the blackhead forms. The top of the blackhead is exposed to air, which is causing it to dry out faster and turns it black. This gives the blackhead its signature look (and of course its name).
We still don’t understand exactly what causes the excess oil production in the glands of the skin. Hormonal changes and other imbalances in the body seem to play a role.
How Can I Remove Blackheads? You should never just try to squeeze a blackhead out since this could damage the skin and lead to infections.
Instead, place a warm compress on the affected area to soften both the skin and the hardened oil plug that forms the blackhead. Then using some gloves or a clean cloth or tissue, gently try to squeeze the blackhead out. If gentle pressure doesn’t do the job, try softening it up with warm compress again.
There are also some commercial blackhead remover tools or blackhead extractors available. Discuss the use of one of these with your dermatologist.
How Can I Prevent Blackheads? Of course the best way to fight blackheads is to prevent them in the first place. Start by cleaning your face daily with a gentle cleanser that doesn’t dry your skin out. Using a harsh cleanser can actually lead to excessive oil production, which we are trying to avoid.
Use a gentle exfoliating mask weekly to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation on your skin.
Avoid oily creams, lotions and makeup. Use a gentle moisturizer instead.
Drink plenty of water and get out in the sunshine daily whenever possible for healthy, well-balanced skin.
By implementing these suggestions, you should see an improvement in your skin and the amount of blackheads within a matter of weeks.
