Dubai Offers an Experience Like No Where Else on Earth

by Lex Patel

Thirty years ago, Dubai was little more than a small port. Today, however, things are much different. Over the last 25 years, the city has grown into an astounding Arabian metropolis. Dubai is known as a city filled with superlatives, boasting the tallest building in the world, the largest manmade island and even the most extravagant hotel. As one of the United Arab Emirates' seven emirates, Dubai is an independent city-state. It is known for being more contemporary and progressive than its neighbors. The city is both visually breathtaking and dynamic.

For centuries, Dubai was simply a small port known for its pearls. In fact, all of its main industries were from the sea, and most of the residents were fishermen. During the 1960s, oil was found near the city. This would change the region forever. This find triggered immigrants from across the globe to move to the city, giving it a more substantial immigrant population than any other city on Earth. The Royal Dynasty was ambitious, and had an innovative vision for how and where the residents should live. The region soon became a large part of the finance industry as well as a transportation hub. Business and leisure travelers continue to flock to the city, despite the fact that the oil reserves have long been depleted. Dubai today is one of the richest cities in the world. Luxury cars fill the streets, and visitors stay in some of the world's finest seven-star hotels. Everything, including high tea, is luxurious and extravagant in Dubai.

There are no limits on the number of things to see and do in Dubai. Some of the most popular tours include those that look at culture and local history, architectural tours and desert safaris. Tours range from a half-day to multiple day safaris that include riding camels and sandboarding. Tour types include group tours that are guided or partially guided, private tours and custom tours. No one is ever bored in Dubai. From watching the world's largest dancing fountain to snow skiing at Ski Dubai indoor ski resort, there's always something to do. You can even ride the world's fastest elevator to an observation atop the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa. Dubai also provides plenty of natural wonders. The local beaches are spellbounding, thanks to their white crushed shell sand. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve can also be found just outside of the city. You've probably never seen a desert wonderland like this, except in the movies.

Dubai's diverse shopping experience is one of its biggest attractions. Traditional outdoor markets, called souks, can be found throughout the city. The most well-known of these souks are the gold souks. These markets have a selection of exotic jewelry made from gold, silver and other precious metals. On the other end of the spectrum from these quaint peddlers is the Dubai Mall. It is one of the most extensive shopping malls in the world, with 1,200 shops. The mall is also home to an underground zoo, an ice skating rink and an indoor theme park, in addition to all of its shops.

It goes without saying, people lived in the region even before all of this modern luxury. The historic Bastakiya district is one of the most fascinating areas of the city. The district is home to a lot of traditional Arabian architecture, from delightful courtyards and distinctive archways to wind catcher towers. Reaching the Bastakiya district can be an experience as well. Abra boats, which are open-top water taxis, are just one way to reach the area. These boats will take you quickly from the Bur Dubai town center to the Bastakiya or Deira district. The Deira district was the site of the first settlement at Dubai. The district today is known for its traditional souks and street vendors.

In modern day Dubai, there's something for every interest. Forty years ago, the tallest building in the city was only a few stories tall. Today it boasts the world's tallest building. Its record-breaking, palm tree-shaped manmade islands can be observed from space shuttles orbiting the Earth. No matter if you are searching for opulent luxury or excitement and adventure, Dubai has what you are looking for. Scheduling a tour of Dubai for your next holiday is sure to provide an experience no one in your family will ever forget.
