One Excuse After Another!

by Paul Idtse

Over the years, I have found a variety of excuses that work well for me. I don't like making excuses. When I do, it is a harsh reminder of the work I have ahead of me.

The other day was a prime example of my personal excuse making. It was a dreary, mid-fall day with rain forecast throughout the entirety of it. So much for riding my bike. Oh well, I deserve a day off now and then.

I called a friend to see if we might catch up in the afternoon. He was up for it, so I quickly got to work getting done what needed to be done before heading off to see him. He recently bought a new, old-house. He has plenty of work ahead of him for quite some time. It became more obvious as he toured me around, mentioning what project 'this' entails, and what project 'that' entails. The rain let up enough for us to walk around the outside and see all the work that exists there as well.

Eventually, I headed back for home. The drive between us is a little less than an hour. With windshield wipers clearing my view, I began to think about how to complete the day. About a half-hour away from home, I noticed the skies beginning to clear. Not in the forecast, but we all know how that goes.

And then the excuses began...

Excuse #1: I am only two rides away from meeting my biking goal for the year.

Excuse #2: I know I do not want to do this, but I know I need to do this.

Excuse #3: The sun has come out, the forecast has cleared, the temperature is adequate, and I have plenty of time to get a ride in before darkness sets in.

I hate excuses! Often they win. I have said many times that I would rather sit on the couch rather than work my body, if the results could be the same. I love to be lazy, and I wanted to be lazy that day, but there were too many abundant excuses that were about to take over.

Damn! I hate excuses! I try not to listen, but I know better.

I attempt to be consistent with exercising my body. I don't think I'm excessive by averaging four to five workouts a week. I know my body needs it; deserves it.

Off I went to complete my bike ride. I often look for an excuse to do so.
