Pedals by Rogue guitar shop

Pedals can come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes for a multitude of both recreational and work related pieces of equipment. Perhaps the most common use of pedals is on bicycles, where they play an important role in bike locomotion and stability.

When choosing a pedal for a bike, it is very important to first decide what type of riding activity will the bike be used for primarily. Because there are many different types of bicycles and because those bicycles are often used for different purposes, there are many different types of pedals. Pedals for a child's bike, for instance, may have a strap over the foot to help train the child to keep their foot on the pedal. This can help keep the child's foot and leg away from the bike chain or other moving parts that may cause the child to become entangled or injured. Some adult bikes also feature straps to help lessen the strain of having to actively keep ones foot on the pedal at all times.

Many off road bicycle pedals feature rugged all metal construction as well as grip spikes to help keep the rider's foot from slipping in wet conditions. Pedals made for racing bikes are usually much lighter and manufactured from aluminum or plastic in order to keep the rider's weight as low as possible for speed maintenance. These racing pedals are also usually aerodynamically designed and have a discernible topside for foot placement and planed bottom.

Another common biking activity is stunt riding. Stunt bicycles are generally equipped with lightweight aluminum double sided pedals with an easy spin. This is so that the rider performing the tricks will always land on the correct side of the pedal, because both sides of the pedal are identical. This makes it far easier for the trick rider to do the aerial stunts that are always so crowd pleasing.

For the casual rider, which is the most common, all of these choices are more a matter of aesthetics and comfort. A casual rider may like the way racing pedals feel or might prefer the heavy traction grip of an off road pedal. A person who rides long distances regularly might benefit from a lightweight bicycle pedal with a strap. There are many things to consider when choosing, but perhaps the most important issue is whether or not the pedal makes the rider feel secure and comfortable.
