English Springer Spaniel - Key Facts You Ought To Understand

by Brent A. McCoy

The English Springer Spaniel (also called just the "Springer Spaniel") is a sporting breed. They feature long ears and a brown or black and white coat. It was in the mid-1800s the breed is assumed to have first came into existence. They were initially used for flushing birds into the air when hunting. Nowadays they are popular as a hunting dog, for drug detection or a companion dog. They can be recognized by their unique hunting ability and high intelligence. Their breeding lineage includes the Norfolk Spaniel and Shropshire Spaniel and are assumed to have first existed in England.

They're categorized as a medium sized breed. The appropriate female size is 40 pounds and a height of 19 inches, while the male dimensions are 50 pounds and a height of 20 inches. Their disposition is commonly known to be cheerful, playful and devoted. They are mostly friendly with people they haven't met, and this can mean they are unsuitable as a guard dog. They are confirmed to be extremely intelligent, and is ranked 13th compared to every other dog when being trained to understand new commands.

They are good towards kids, and that means they are suitable for a family pet. Other animals like dogs of the same gender and birds don't mix well with them. Grooming them is a fairly simple job. They call for full grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, and moderate brushing through their coat every few days. They can be suited to life in an apartment, but enjoy having a good yard so they have plenty of space.

Like the majority of medium sized breeds, they're largely longer-lived and have a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health risk is hip dysplasia, and they're also vulnerable to PRA, epilepsy and easy weight gain. Activities like hunting, swimming, learning tricks, obedience training, agility or fetch will give them great pleasure. To prevent the development of bad behavior, they require long walks each day because of their medium to high amount of energy.

You should be able to meet their high demands for mental and physical stimulation if you own the English Springer Spaniel. They are very suitable for hunters or active owners and families, but not the best choice for less active owners. Perhaps the most significant reason dog lovers find this breed particularly appealing is seen in that it has a high level of intelligence and a cheerful temperament that makes it easy to teach almost anything.
