Life in Leander Texas
Leander has always been poised for the growth and expansion that has befell it the last few years. Situated on hwy. 183, just a few miles north of Cedar Park and Austin, Leander was seen to be little more than a store, gas station and post office to those passing by on their way to Lampasas or other towns north. Leander had a vast rural population that was and still is forward thinking. Leander had a new high school in the mid 70’s, another new high school in the late 80’s and now it is one of the fastest growing school districts in the country. It is a nationally acclaimed school district with 33 campuses that encompass not only the rural areas of Leander but Cedar Park students as well.
Leander is a progressive and modern community that still prides itself on the small town atmosphere that is so common in Central Texas. There are muti-acre ranches still available in this area as well as some highly acclaimed master-planned communities that offer home owners fantastic properties with unsurpassed views and amenities. Many of these communities are situated with homes on acreage lots for those who want more privacy. Leander is on the inside edge of the Hill Country and lends itself to tree-covered home sites where the natural beauty and wildlife can be a part of your daily life. A few of these master communities have taken advantage of geographical and environmental qualities of the area and built homes that are modern and stylish but unpretentious offering homeowners a place that is relaxed and ecologically suited to the area.
As a progressive and forward thinking community, Leander has developed into an area that can coexist with the larger neighbors to the south such as Austin. The 183 toll way is fully open for drivers wanting to travel to Austin or the Round Rock areas. The TOD (transit oriented development) Park & Ride provides an alternative to driving to Austin. The Capital Metro Light Rail is scheduled to open March 30th, 2009 offering commuter even more options for the ride to Austin. Leander has seen the opening of a super plus grocery chain, a major building and supply store, clothing and other retail shops as well as national franchise restaurants and fast food suppliers.
Situated as it is, Leander is only a short distance from the north shore of Lake Travis. Commonly known as just “the lake” this is where you head to when you are looking for fun and sun. Lake Travis offers everyone a chance to try out any number of water sports and activities. There are places for swimming, all types of boating, fishing, or windsurfing. You can try your hand at any of the activities or just find a quiet spot to relax and enjoy the clear waters and cool breezes. There are numerous parks for day use and some offer overnight camping.
Whether you are a growing family, retirees or a single person, Leander has a lot to offer anyone who wants a progressive lifestyle but still wants a hint of that small town country charm.
