Dental hygiene is important for long term dental care. Brushing the teeth is the most important part of oral hygiene. Flossing is also very important because flossing helps to remove food particles from the gaps of teeth which cannot be accessed by tooth brush.

Brushing the teeth is an excellent way to check tartar build-up, though once hard plaque has developed, and it is strongly recommended to prevent gum disease.

Brushing the teeth is not as easy as you thought it is. You should brush your teeth with a good toothbrush after every meal or at least twice daily and floss once per day. Use a pea sized dollop of toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush. Brush with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Hold the brush at a 45 degree angle to the teeth. Brush back and forth with tooth wide strokes along the gum line with gentle pressure. Brush for several minutes. Use the end bristles to clean the inside of the front teeth with gentle up and down strokes.

When you are teaching your child the art of brushing, use smaller amount of toothpaste and use toothbrush specifically designed for children. It is advisable to visit your dentist when you want to introduce a child to tooth-brushing.

How Often Should You Replace Your Brush?

Dentist and hygienist recommend replacing your brush head every 3 months, because the bristles get worn out and so, the brushing efficiency gets decreased. Worn out bristles may also cause damage to teeth and gums as bristles become irregular with usage. Tooth brush should never be shared with anybody else as this may result in spread of disease causing pathogens.
