Why Do We Love Car Computer Games?

All the speed, none of the speeding tickets…

by Sam Qam

One of the most popular types of computer games on the market is racing games. These might include the hyper real experience you get when you play something like 'Gran Turismo' which looks almost impeccable and almost feels like you're driving a car even though you are only using your thumbs. Or you might prefer something like the classic 'Mario Kart' with Princess' racing toadstools and magic icons and fantasy environments. Whichever style of racing game you like, they are all essentially a game in which you race against either computer controlled opponents or humans sitting next to you or online gamers.

So why do we like this type of game so much? Here is a look at some of the reasons.

Competitive

Some say that people who play a lot of racing games on the computer are more aggressive drivers in real like. This might be true for some people but then there are plenty of aggressive drivers who have never played a computer game in their life. Gamers like racing because it is competitive. There is no simpler test of skill than a few laps round a race track, with a clear winner declared at the end. All racing games offer a safe and cheap environment in which racers of all ages can meet to compete on an even playing field.

Skill

Gamers also love racing games because they offer a great deal of variety when it comes to testing their skill. No two laps against an opponent are likely to be the same and there is always a way of doing something slightly better that gamers love spending hours trying to master.

Modification

For anyone who is keen on cars in real life, but who can't afford to spend the money they would like to on their sports car of choice, racing games often offer players the opportunity to tune and upgrade their vehicles with performance car parts to a degree that would not be possible in real life. Gamers can live out their driving and car modification fantasies on the pixelated tracks to their hearts content, without having to worry about insurance, accidents, death or the police.

Fun

Above all, racing games are a favourite because they are so much fun. They allow gamers to do something fun with their friends which they would struggle to do in real life, which really is the point of most computer games. If you want to build a city: there's a game for that, if you want to be in a rock band: there's game for that, and if you want to race around the Nürburg Ring in a Ferrari Enzo then of course there is a game for that too.
