2005-06 Upper Deck Trilogy Hockey Review
The long and cold Canadian winters of our youth meant one thing….hockey. Constants in most of our lives were 6 am practices, playing on the pond and watching our NHL heroes skate on TV. During this special time, we were introduced to our hockey card hobbies. Whether it was Howe, Orr, Gretzky or Sakic….O Pee Chee, Upper Deck, Score or Parkhurst everyone remembers the sets and players where they developed their passion for collecting hockey cards. The rebirth of the NHL in 2005/2006 also brings about a renaissance in hockey card collecting. With the one-two punch of Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin and an army of sets featuring cards we couldn’t even dream of as kids, this year is the most exciting year for collectors in over a decade….if not ever. This series of articles will breakdown many of 05/06’s most talked about hockey card sets. Similar to recent editions of Upper Deck Trilogy basketball, 2005/2006 Trilogy Hockey features plexi-glass cards made famous in Upper Deck Ice.Each pack contains either a plexi-glass card, an autograph card or a memorabilia card. This is excellent news for those "card chasers" out there. The plexi-glass cards are very popular and very striking. Collectors must carefully remove a white protective film from the front of the card. These plexi-glass cards are serial numbered to 599 copies. Plexi-glass card autographs include Trilogy Ice Scripts which features sport prints of current superstars such as Vincent Lecavalier, Saku Koivu and Mats Sundin as well as sports prints of legends such as Ray Bourque.Upper Deck Trilogy rookie cards are serial-numbered to 999 copies and three per box on average can be found. Trilogy rookies are numbered 171-220, with the key cards being Sidney Crosby (currently booking at $350) and Alexander Ovechkin (booking at $250).Collectors should also keep their eyes out for Personal Scripts, which feature short prints of NHL heroes of the past such as Guy Lafleur, Cam Neely and Bobby Hull. Also look for a Gordie Howe Personal Script, which would be an exciting addition to any sports card collection. Each 9-pack box will deliver 3 game jersey cards, 3 Frozen In Time sequentially numbered plexi-glass cards, 2 Autographs and 1 Ice Scripts Autographed plexi-glass card.Three different Wayne Gretzky's are featured on the box. Wayne Gretzky in an Oilers jersey, a Kings jersey and sporting a Rangers jersey.Basic Info: 90 card base set, 50 Trilogy rookies numbered 171-220Inserts: Frozen in Time (#’d to 599), Frozen in Time Crystal Collection (#’d to 25)Memorabilia: Honorary Swatches (1:3), Honorary Patches (#’d to 10)Autographs: Script One Future Stars (1:9), Script Two Current Stars (1:22), Script Three Superstars (#’d to 50), Legendary Scripts (1:45), Personal Scripts Inscriptions (1:90), Frozen in Time Crystal Collection Autos (#’d to 10), Honorary Scripted Swatches (#’d to 10), Honorary Scripted Patches (#’d to 5), Ice Scripts Plexiglass (1:9)
