When many people start there own online businesses take an idea and they create a website. They think they can get people to come just because it's there. Then they read a few articles about getting traffic to there website. I, like these people did the same thing. Most likely you had a similar or hopefully more educated experience when it came to you're traffic.

Some of these decide that they will "optimize" there website. Perhaps they had an idea for a gambling website; they want to optimize for the word "gambling". That is mistake #1 that people will make. If you are one of those people, you have to stop what you are doing right now. You can't randomly choose a word and optimize you're website with that word. Before you start any website you must visit this website: http://inventory.overture.com.

With this site you can type in a general key word into the field and the results show all the keywords that are related to the key word. In addition, this tool show you how many people searched each keyword on overture(yahoo) in the past month. This is a very useful tool and should be used al the time. Okay, so what do you do with this information? If you put in you're general key word; for example, "gambling", you can see that there are hundreds of thousands of people who used that exact search with yahoo.

If you scroll down you can see that the search number gets smaller and smaller. What you want to do is put in you're key word and find a couple of words near the bottom. After you have chosen a few words, place type them in, in Google. (every word on that list would be doubled for google) Look at the competition or the amount of search results. Each one of those are websites that you are competing against. I recommend that you find words with the least competition. That is not always the best choice as we will see tomorrow.

Now that you have you're keywords chosen, it is time to analyze our competition. This is very important. You will see what factors to look at and what how to look for them. We will also see how you can take the information from you're competitors and do it a little bit better. In addition, you will learn how you can automate the process.
