Maintaining the right level of sugar in your diet

by Joushua James

Having the right level of sugar intake is important because if taken in excess, it can lead to tooth decay and diabetes. Sugar is found to occur naturally in foods such as fruits and milk, and we should try to not to cut down on such foods because they form a part of a healthy diet. What we should focus is to cut down on foods with added sugar. You can find sugar added to foods such as fizzy drinks and juice drinks. You can find a considerable amount of added sugar in sweets, biscuits and jam. Cakes pastries, pudding and ice creams are food that contains a whole lot of added sugar. More sugar means a thicker waistline and of course obesity. There are many steps you could take to cut down on your intake of sugar. You could have lesser sugar drinks and snacks. Try water or unsweetened fruit juice instead of opting for fizzy drinks. Those of you who have a penchant for fizzy drinks can try having fruit juice diluted with sparkling water. You could try to have a currant bun, slice of melon, malt or a bread loaf with low fat spread, instead of eating cakes and biscuits to ease hunger. You could gradually reduce the amount of sugar you add to hot drinks and breakfast cereals and finally rule it out completely. When buying food, check the food labels. If a product’s food label shows a higher sugar level avoid such foods as part of your diet. When having bread you could use a low fat spread or cheese instead of spreading jam, marmalade syrup, treacle or honey. During breakfast, it’s better to opt for whole grain breakfast cereals rather than cereals that are coated with sugar and honey.Sugar found naturally in whole fruits is less likely to cause tooth decay, reason being that such sugar is contained within the structure of the fruit. When the fruit is juiced or blended, it is released and such released sugars damage teeth, especially if a person has the habit of having fruit juice very often. When having sugar drinks it is important to avoid sipping them because the longer sugar touches your teeth the more damage it does to the teeth.
