Planning Your Luggage Needs

by Stewart Wrighter

Everyone loves to travel, but there are not many people who enjoy packing for trips. It is a complicated process for most of us and no one wants to forget anything vital for a vacation, but we do not want to over-pack either, as this means we will have to haul quite a lot more weight around the airport. Luckily, modern luggage is made to help us in many ways. Although your suitcase will not pack your belongings for you, its telescoping handles will provide you with the necessary convenience to simply tilt the bag and wheel it away. Telescoping hand carts are often used to carry luggage and for good reason. These carts assist us in carrying the heaviest of bags.

Before you begin packing, you must decide which bag you will be using. By selecting the right bag, packing will be made that much simpler so you need only ask yourself a few questions. Namely, where are you going and how long do you plan to stay there?

For a weekend trip, most of us need little more than a 22-inch carry-on sized bag. Most luggage sets come with one, it being the smallest of the pack. Are you going way for a long four-day weekend? This size works for that as well. Women will be pleased to know that all of their shoe and cosmetics needs will fit nicely into this sized bag, in addition to a number of ensemble changes. If you are flying and do not plan on checking this bag, remember that all liquids must be kept in 3oz containers or jars. A duffel bag might easily contain all of the things you need to bring, but most will find that box-shaped luggage pieces on wheels are a much simpler way to travel.

For a trip that is going to last around a week, you need to think bigger. A 25- or 26-inch bag should do nicely for all of your clothing and shoe needs. You will also be able to pack the necessary supply of bath products and makeup tubes perhaps even a second coat or hat. This kind of medium-sized bag should meet most airlines' standards for checking without travelers having to remove any necessities to reduce weight. But before leaving for the airport, check and see whether the airline you plan to take has placed restrictions upon the luggage you carry. Many airlines charge extra if you want to check a first or second bag, and often they will not allow each bag to exceed a certain weight limit.

For a two-week trip, take the biggest bag in the set which is the one that is 27, 28, or 29 inches. Anything larger may be restricted by an airline, so be sure to check those restrictions before you pack a single item. This larger bag will contain all that you need for your long trip, except perhaps for bath supplies which will be restricted by airport security rules. If you think you will need more than 3oz of shampoo during your stay, it is best to purchase it when you arrive. Thinking ahead in this manner will help ensure that you do not pack unnecessary items which will be taking up precious space in your suitcase.
