Points That You Must Learn About Rheumatoid Arthritis

by Ericka Lopez

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that affects the different joints of the body and may even include vital organs. It is characterized by swelling of the tissues around the joints that creates severe pain to an individual. Autoimmune disorders are health problems where the body's defense system attacks its own tissues and considers them as invaders of the body or source of infection. The immune system of the body serves as the line of defense against infection caused by viruses and bacteria. It aims to localize infection so that it will not spread in other parts of the body. Inflammation is usually associated when the body has an infection.

Prevalence of RA

Rheumatoid arthritis has been deemed as a systemic disease since it can affect every part of the body. No known treatment has been identified for rheumatoid arthritis and individuals who have this condition experience recurring episodes of inflammation all throughout their life. Chronic rheumatoid arthritis may be considered a severe problem since it can destroy joints permanently and deform joint areas like knees, toes, wrists, and fingers.

Cure

The possible treatment of rheumatoid arthritis is a combination of exercise and rest, proper education of the factors that triggers the inflammation, medication and joint protection, and to some surgical treatment. Medication used for rheumatoid arthritis reduces swelling and relieves pain. The most commonly used medication for RA is called pain relievers or analgesics. Since rheumatoid arthritis has no known cure, reducing pain associated with inflammation is the target for medication. Pain killers are effective in reducing pain but many analgesics have high potential for body tolerance and addiction.

Effects of long-term use of medicine

Individuals who have rheumatoid arthritis turn to medication as an easier escape from the pain associated with the inflammation. The danger of prolonged use of medication is imminent however, when the individual can no longer manage the use of medication by taking the drug in higher doses or by taking the medications even without signs of inflammation. Many of those who have entered drug treatment programs traced addiction from simple cases of treatment for pain until the use of the drugs become uncontrollable and unmonitored.

Advantages of Proper Education on RA

The onset of rheumatoid arthritis may differ from one person to another who has the illness. There are many ways however, to prevent or control swelling. Proper diet and exercise is essential not just to people who have RA but to anyone at all. Avoiding food consumption that can trigger inflammation is important. There are many ways to prevent constant use of medication so that individuals who suffer from RA may not fall into the whirlpool of medication addiction. Drug treatment centers provide information on other alternatives for patients who have addiction towards pain relievers. When proper education is obtained and followed, the possibility of addiction from medication is reduced.
