Industrial Applications for Refractory Industrial Products
Refractory Products are in great demand due to the increase in industrial units nowdays. Growing number of furnaces has resulted in an increase in the demand for Refractory Products. Refractory Products are basically materials with great heat resistance. They can endure temperatures as extreme as 1000°F. Certain chemical and physical properties make them suitable for various industrial applications such as furnaces, incinerators, kilns, reactors and for making crucibles. All Refractory Products can be classified on the basis of chemical composition, fusion temperatures, and manufacturing method.
Types of Refractory Industrial Products for Industrial Applications * Chemical Composition-On the basis of chemical composition, there are three types of Refractories: Basic, Neutral and Acidic. Acidic Refractories consist of acidic materials like silica and alumina. They are not affected by acidic materials but are easily affected by basic materials. Neutral Refractories are stable to both bases and acids and are utilized in environments where there is exposure to acids. Basic Refractories are used in basic atmospheres. They are kept from acidic materials and remain stable when in contact with alkaline materials.
* Fusion Temperatures-Based on fusion temperature, Refractories are classified into three types: Normal, High and Super. Fire clay is the example for Normal Fusion Refractory clay with a temperature of about 580-1780°. High Refractory has a temperature of around 1780 - 2000°, e.g. Chromite. While Super Refractory like Zircon has temperature below 2000°.
* Manufacturing Method-The process of manufacturing is also a detrimental factor in defining the Refractory. Some Refractory Products come out with proper shapes while others without definite shapes and sizes. Known as monolithic Refractories, they are given shape during their application. Most common types of monolithic Refractories are ramming masses, plastic masses, castables, etc. Most induction furnaces use monolithic Refractories for the dry vibration linings. They are available in dry powder form usually with magnesia or alumina composition.
