Color Trends: Where Do They Come From

by Tina Gleisner

Many people base the color of their clothes, furniture and home decorations on the color trends of the year. Our lifestyle seems to change depending on the color trends of the year, the best example is the pink and a black bathroom tiles way back 1950's, so you haven't seen much of it lately right?

Who Decide the Color Trends?

We all know about color trends this year but have you thought who decides what color is trending this year?

The group called Color Marketing Group (GMG) is a leader in an integral part of many different industries. The group hold meetings everywhere in the world to address regional (North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia/Pacific) and locals, i.e. east coast. midwest and western US color trends can differ.

However, color trends are also determined by technology where they adapt and deliver color faster than anything else, i.e. faster than printed material, clothing or furnishings. Big box retailers like Crate & Barrel and the Pottery Barn affect color choices because of their advertising, store displays and the products we buy for our homes. Television, magazines and catalogs never fail to influence us through their advertising.

Interior designs also follow the color trends which start with fashion. The colors that commercial design trends have involve a variety because they need to work for larger groups of people rather than a single family. Commercial does lead in green technologies as they are making decisions for longer term.

How Color Influences Our Lives

Color influences our lives and these are some examples of it:

• The history and values of our past generations influenced by colors.

• Color guides us towards the future, like the trending every year.

• We use natural colors in our house as we are being influenced by environmentally responsible and sustainable design.

• Trends focus on how and why different color hues are used versus focusing on a single color, as the color theory is becoming more important.

• While there are significant differences in color choices between individuals, there are general trends in color preferences across cultures.

• The feeling toward an object with its colors is an example of being influenced.

Did you know that the trend of having pink for baby girls and blue for baby boys started in the 1950s? It just means that color preferences are subject to external influences. Men and women respond to not just the color, but the name of the color.
