Ways To Get the Most Enjoyment Drinking Wine

by Blake Bolston

Everybody wants to be able to go out and pick a great bottle of wine either for themselves or their friends and family. If it's for yourself, then it's usually not a big deal. If you make a poor pick, you're the only one that suffers. On the other hand, it can become a nerve racking experience to go out and pick that perfect wine as a gift or for the next special occasion and make a good impression.

So what can you do?

Here are some tips to make your next wine purchase a success.

Find the Right Store to Make the Very Best Purchase

Your purchase of a good bottle of wine really depends on where you live. There are many supermarkets and large retail chains like Target and Walmart that offer a variety of wines to choose from. You can find quality wines, but they'll probably be the major producers versus the smaller specialty types.

Also you might have the option of finding wines at small independently owned liquor stores, wine warehouses or smaller specialty stores. Also, don't forget with today's technology, you always have the option of buying your wine online.

How to Read the Label to Make Your Best Choice

There is a lot you can learn to make a wise buying decision. Some of the major terms that will really help are the following:

Vintage

This is a good term to know. For your purposes, you're going out to a buy a bottle of wine to drink right away. I'm sure you're not looking to store it for years. Don't buy a bottle that's too old. If you want a great tasting bottle that's lively, buy a more recent year.

Alcohol Content

You want a great tasting wine that's fresh and balanced. To much alcohol ruins the wines overall balance. I might assume the reason to buy the wine isn't to get blasted at your next gathering. Well, I could be wrong, but if that's the reason, there's other spirits that can do a far better job. So with that said, look for wines with an alcohol content of 14% and less.

Specific Geography

Look for a label that gives a specific region of wine production. If it says from California, you probably better pass. Now, if it says, Sonoma Valley in California, then you are going to be making a better choice. A wine must have a minimum of 75% of its grapes from that particular region to legally put it on the label.

These are some great ways to make a great decision on your next purchase of wine. Last but not least, if you do get stuck or confused about what to buy, you can always ask for help. Better ask than be embarrassed at your next party.
