The Soil Preferece for Grape Growing

by Gino Vittone

Grapes that are grown in the right soil will produce a large plant with some of the most delicious, healthy fruits. The right soil is the main factor that will affect the grape growing conditions. Knowing the different type of grape growing soil is very important to the grower. The soil conditions will make a big difference in the way the grapes grow. The juiciest, sweetest fruits will grow if you plant them in the very best soil.

Knowing how to choose the right grape growing soil is very important because it provides your plants with much needed nutrients for them to grow and be healthy. You may not be aware of it but other than holding the roots for support, the soil is also responsible for controlling the nutrients absorbed by the roots. A macrobiotic soil is by far the most ideal of all soil preferences when growing grapes. However, to achieve better grape growing conditions, growers must also ensure that the nutrients are more than enough for the grapes to absorb. Soil analysis is the best way to check that the proper nutrients are in the soil. Sometimes, having too many nutrients will not yield good fruits either. Essentially, for vineyard soils to be ideal for grape growing, they must contain a lot of minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, nitrogen and potassium. Another important characteristic of a grape growing soil is its slight acidity. As such, calcium is very important because it works to neutralize the soils pH levels.

Iron is another nutrient that must be present in the soil for photosynthesis. Along with magnesium,it is an essential component of photosynthesis. Both significantly affect grape growing conditions. For healthier leaves, nitrogen is a must. Meanwhile, roots absorption is maximized if the soil is rich in phosphates. Of course, potassium must also be present in the soil because it works to hasten vine metabolism. Having enough of these nutrients in your grape growing soil will make the soil ideal for planting.

Notwithstanding the presence of nutrients in the grape growing soil, there are also other factors to consider in achieving excellent grapes growing condition. A good drainage system is also very important. In addition to that, you must also see to it that there is a steady anchorage for the plant to grow healthy and strong. Large plants, like grape vines must have a sound root system which will provide the best anchorage. A requirement of thirty to forty inces of loose soil is needed for the wide root system. Likewise, the use of a trellis is also necessary for better support.

You will notice that grape vines are usually planted on slopes because the slopes provide better drainage. You see, grapes will not grow well in areas with puddles or excess water. Instead of growing more fruits, they will grow more leaves. Other than that, because of its lower nutrient content, steep slopes provide the most ideal condition for growing grapes.

As with most plants, if the grapes are planted in best soil the growing is easy. They will also grow better if they are given the best grape growing conditions.
