FDA Approves Parkinson’s Patch

People who suffer from the early stages of Parkinson’s disease will have a new option to treat their illness, a patch. The first patch to treat the illness was approved last week by the FDA.
The Neuro patch is to be used once daily and will contain a drug called rotigotine, which has previously never been sold before in the United States. The patch will be manufactured by Schwarz Pharma AG .
According to MSNBC, “Parkinson’s disease results from the loss of dopamine-producing brain cells. Dopamine is crucial for the communication between cells that control muscle movement, which explains the trembling commonly seen in Parkinson’s patients. Rotigotine works by activating dopamine receptors in the brain, mimicking the neurotransmitter’s effect.”
Some of the side affects associated with the patch include nausea, dizziness, vomiting, skin reactions, insomnia and drowsiness.
This new advanvement to treat Parkinson’s should come welcome to the millions that suffer from Parkinson’s disease. Recently, celebrity advocate of increased research of Parkinson’s disease Michael J Fox challenged the drug industry to produce more innovative cures and take greater risks to find those cures.
Fox spoke to drug makers and creators at the 2007 BIO conference saying, “Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies aren’t interested in high-risk studies critical in determining whether creative ideas could yield therapies for the 20,000 human diseases that have no cure. They are more interested in repackaging old ideas and compounds in an effort to continue reaping vast returns. Levodopa is the gold-standard treatment for Parkinson’s, the disease I live with. Don’t get me wrong, I love my meds… But it’s a little frustrating that the best drug we’ve got is one that’s been around for 40 years…But, hey, credit where credit is due — I couldn’t be happier about the recent advances. What comes to mind is antidepressants for dogs, which makes it a little easier for me because my dog is feeling better.”
