Four Letter Word No More

I know better than to go on a second date with Luis after he dropped the rather inappropriate ‘can you f*** like a porn star?’ bomb on me before we parted ways – for good. It’s no secret that most, if not all, girls in Brooklyn NY fall into a certain demeaning stereotype. With bodies scantily clothed, sky-high heels that rival the Empire State Building and faces caked with cheap face color, many a Brooklynite would pass as escorts in Brooklyn NY at a glance. Though I grew up in a town famous for New York escort service, I was still very much taken aback by my date’s indecent approach. I just might be the epitome of good moral character.

Personally, I have nothing against New York playmates although I would mind if I were mistaken for, let alone associated with, the sensual bunch. I’m guessing my Jewish heritage manages to get the best of me when it comes to more sensitive matters such as sex. Call me old-fashioned but I think it’s not something to be treated with utter casualness, contrary to the belief of most hot girls in New Jersey, New York, or in the entire U.S.A. for that matter.

These days sex is no longer considered taboo, or at least in the more liberated Western countries this holds true. The ever prevalent media glamorizes premarital sex, teenage pregnancy and experimental same-sex relationships. This in turn gives viewers the impression that ‘it is okay’ to do it as ‘it’s just sex’ – far from the four-letter word that it used to be. Of late, finding a television series or a movie without any sexual undertones is like searching for a needle in a haystack. Some shows have completely forgone subtlety with suggestive working titles like “Sex and the City”, “Hung” and “Skins”. Even supposed children’s books follow an undeniably sensual context. Take the “Twilight” series for example which is deeply rooted in forbidden love, passion and sex – with supernatural characters, to make things even worse. New media, commonly known as the internet, certainly won’t take a back seat in promoting sex. If anything, it makes sex all the more accessible what with the growing number of free online streaming, video download and social networking sites especially designed for the above-mentioned purpose. Porn sites, without a price at that, are all over the net to further sate the appetite of far too many sexual viewers.

‘Sex sells’ seems to be ample justification for the popularity of such sexually-laden material seen practically everywhere from TV shows to consumer product advertisements. Now that I think of it, can I really blame my (ex) date for his improper demeanor? Well, our (dating) fate has been decided anyway. Though sex sells, I still am not a convinced buyer.
