What are the Best Muscle Building Exercises?
health, bodybuilding
You don't have to spend much time in a gym to see loads of different exercises. Sure, there are a few that you recognise, but it seems that every guy in there is doing something a little different. At least thats what I thought when I first began my muscle building journey all those years ago.
So what I hope to do is give you the foundation needed to understand what makes a good exercise and what makes a bad one. I'll even list a couple of my favourite muscle building exercises for you. These are the exercises responsible for more muscle world wide than any other exercise, so make sure you pay attention.
I'm going to split all exercises into two main categories. Firstly, you have isolation exercises. These are exercises that only stimulate one or two muscles at the same time. A bicep curl is an example of this. It really only focuses on your biceps. While other muscles are involved, they don't get used as heavily as the bicep.
The second group is the compound exercise. These are exercises that stimulate lots of muscles at the same time. The best example of this would be the squat. It involves your quads, your hamstrings, your calves, your core section.
So now you understand the two groups, which do you think are the best for overall muscle building? Hopefully you answered the compound exercises. If you think that doing bicep curls is going to build more muscle for you, go do 50 pushups, then come back and read the rest of this articles.
Seriously, if you want to build muscle, you need to do compound exercises, they will add muscle all over your body and also help you boost your natural "steroid" levels. You see, whenever your body undergoes a large amount of stress, it releases large amounts of hormones like testosterone (aka steroids) and growth hormones to help your body deal with this stress.
So you can see how putting your body under the most amount of stress will help you in the long run. And compound exercises are the best way to do this, because they put the most stress on the most amount of muscle. It's not rocket science is it?
Does this mean that all isolation exercises are bad and not worth your time? Well, yes and no. While they won't help you build as much muscle as compound exercises, there are some muscle groups that are hard to really hit hard with compound exercises.
Onto the juicy bits, the best exercises to perform if you want to build maximum muscle. The best exercise has to be the squat. If you've never performed it, then you really are missing out. It works your entire lower body, as well as the core. If you haven't squatted before, you really need to start.
My second favourite exercise is the deadlift. It's another painful, gut wrenching exercise to perform, which is why it is great for building so much muscle. As a rule of thumb, the harder an exercise is to perform, the better it is for you. Deadlifts will also build great legs, but also your back too. While this will not directly improve your upper body, the hormonal boost you get will definitely help your entire physique.
The third best exercise.... is the bench press. Of all the exercises I've mentioned so far, I bet this is the only one you do. Am I right? After all, it is the exercise that is responsible for massive gains in the chest and shoulder areas. And while it is fantastic, just make sure it's not the only compound exercise in your muscle building arsenal.
Ok, so there it is. All my favourite exercises out in the open. If you haven't already put these into your workouts, do so today, you will thank me in a few weeks time.
