Dishnetwork Satellite TV Is Affordable And Very Competitive With Cable

by Julia Hall

Dish Network is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) company broadcasting digital Satellite Television and audio to homes in the United States. On December 28, 1995 EchoStar successfully launched its first satellite, the EchoStar I. The company EchoStar established the Dish Network name to offer its home satellite TV system to the public. It was a brave, bold new venture. Dishnetwork is owned by parent company EchoStar Communications Corporation and they have been listed for many years on the Nasdaq exchange under the four letter symbol DISH. Dish Network was launched in the early part 1996, and is the competitor of DirecTV in the United States. The company, EchoStar, was originally formed in 1980 by its chairman and CEO Charlie Ergen when he started as a distributor of C-band television systems. In 1987, EchoStar and Charlie applied for a DBS (direct broadcast satellite ) license with the (FCC) Federal Communications Commission and was granted access to the geostationary orbital slot 119° west longitude in 1992. The “C band” or ("compromise" band) is a part of electromagnetic spectrum as it is designated by physists in the microwave range of frequencies going from 4 to 6 GHz. The GHz stands for GigaHertz which is one billion cycles per second. EchoStar evolved from a fairly small retail seller of satellite television programming into a leader in the direct to the customer satellite company with operations in over 15 countries. Mr. Charlie Ergen received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Tennessee and later received MBA from Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina. Mr Ergen worked diligently to promote the rights of Americans to receive home entertainment through the dish. For example, he told Congress in 1998: “For 18 years, we have had kind of a sole purpose, which is to go out and provide competition to other video providers, specifically cable, and offer customers a choice, an alternative, for a way to receive video. Our industry has been able to get over eight million homes with satellite dishes in the last 18 years. In fact, 75 percent of those homes have been installed with the advent of the small pizza-size dishes and DBS.” He was at the forefront of the movement to allow more competition and reduce the prices of cable and satellite TV. He said later at the hearing: “Okay. So we are at a crossroads. We have a choice of more regulation or competition. At EchoStar, we vote for competition and we believe we can provide competitive forces to the marketplace. We need to do several simple things. Make the satellite compulsory law statutory and permanent and expand the license to cover all broadcasts of networks and independents and include all viewing areas, including commercial establishments. We need to roll back the present copyright increases for networks and superstations. These rates must be technology-neutral and on a fair and level playing field with cable.” Thanks to Charlie, Dishnetwork Satellite TV is affordable and very competitive with cable.
