Keeping Out The Cold

by Debra Smith

Keeping a house warm by keeping out the cold is one of the most uninteresting things we need to worry about in our lives. Therefore, here are a few tips that will help you stay warm without having to put the heating on.

Double Glazing

Time was that double glazing was a real luxury, however these days it is much more commonplace in homes around the country. There was even a time when all the talk was about triple glazing, and we still see a few of those windows around too. However, double glazing is still absent in a number of homes and therefore heating those homes is often an expensive thing to do.

Although putting double glazing in is expensive, once you have it in you will save a lot of money on your heating bill and generally be much better off as a result. Also, it may even pay for itself as when you come to sell your house it will be worth a few thousand pounds more because of the windows.

A Sofit Ceiling

If you have a soft ceiling then heat is much less likely to escape through your house's roof and into the atmosphere. As we all know, heat generally rises, and therefore if you have a buffer making it difficult to escape then you 'll keep it in and stay warmer as a result. Of course, heat isn't the only reason you should make sure your ceilings are sofit, as there are many other benefits to having your house kitted out in this manner.

Keeping The Doors and The Windows Shut

It may seem obvious, but all the double glazing and the sofit ceilings in the world aren't going to be too much good if you leave the windows and doors open during the colder winter months. If you have children then there's a fair chance that they will run around in and out of the house, and so you need to drill into them the importance of shutting doors behind them. Furthermore, if you are heating just one room then it can be an excellent idea to keep that internal door shut as there's little point in heating rooms that you actually aren't using.

As you can see there are many ways you can save money by keeping the cold out without putting an extra bar on the fire or turning the heating up.
