Digital Network: Dedicated Server Hosting
Before understanding the term ‘Dedicated server’, you should know what is internet hosting in the computer. It is the process in which the user does not share the server with anyone and he leases the entire server for himself or his company. The advantage in this type of hosting is the company can have maximum control on the server and they can change the type of operating system or any hardware as per their wish. In case of shared hosting, the client will be sharing the server with many departments of the company and the user will not have full control over the server. In a dedicated hosting service the client will be using the entire server without sharing with anyone. They are commonly used in data centers which give superfluous power sources. Again in this type of hosting, the dedicated server hardware is managed by the provider company only and the company will offer support for using any type of operating systems.
The provider company can offer the management support in any type as desired by the user. If it takes the fully managed service the company should do the tasks of rebooting, software updating, and OS upgrading. The customer can simply sit and relax and need not worry about anything. In case the company manages half or medium level it does the work of monitoring and some amount of updating only. The company may agree to any other specific tasks assigned to them as requested by the customer from time to time. If the management of the server is ‘self-managed’ by the user then the company will take care of only monitoring work and some part of maintenance work. Here the customer has to do any kind of operations and upgrading. In case of ‘unmanaged’ level of management, the service provider company will not do any tasks apart from providing the server connection.
The Operating System (OS) of the dedicated server depends on the three factors namely the price, availability of the system and the customer. Commercial types of OS such as Microsoft Windows are offered via program known as Microsoft SPLA. The OS of Linux and UNIX are types of open source systems and the company will not charge the customer for providing it. The OS also determines the level of support and management offered by the service provider. The support is extended for the tasks of patches, security fixes, and any other vulnerable resolutions that crop up in due course.
