How To Escape The Airport With Your Wallet Intact

Duty free is far from free...

by Sam Qam

Whether you have actually been on a plane or not, most people have been to an airport for one reason or another. As soon as you walk through the door, aside from the flight information every poster and billboard, screen and shop front are demanding your money at every stage. This article will help you to get through the terminal without losing the shirt from you back.

The problem with airports is that they are full of people with low inhibitions. These is because people who are going on holiday are generally more relaxed, with a 'holiday' state of mind and are for that reason a bit more free with their money than they might normally be. Airports know this and use people's state of mind, along with their pre flight nerves and post flight euphoria to tease cash from your pocket. Tempting souvenirs, over priced shortbread and trendy electrical goods all scream for your attention and often get it.

Airports also have a captive audience. Not only are you often stuck in them for a few hours waiting for a flight, they are also usually to be found several miles from a city. This means that even if you wanted to go somewhere else, you couldn't for fear of missing your flight or because you have already passed through security.

The only way to escape an airport without spending too much money is to plan ahead. If you know you are going to have a few hours to wait in the terminal, take a packed lunch with you. Why fork out for deli sandwiches when you can eat your own. You can also bring a book from home instead of buying from their handy 'bestseller' stand and buy shortbread gifts from your local supermarket before you leave as they will be much cheaper than those sold at the airport.

One area which can't be skimped on is getting to and from the airport. While a bus may be the cheapest option, it is not likely to be the most convenient with all you bags. Car parks are expensive especially when you are away for a while so avoid them. Belfast city airport taxis are a good example of the best way to get to the airport. You get to feel like a celebrity in a Belfast taxi for a few miles and you can forget about it when you get out. So next time you visit the airport, heed this advice and save yourself a packet.
