Arguments For Selecting Coed Boarding Schools

by Kathy Stearns

Coed boarding schools equip students with many social benefits that they might not acquire at other forms of academy. They offer socialization skills that are highly valuable. It is often much easier for students to acquire certain social skills in a coed environment as opposed to a single gender academy.

Coed boarding schools are academic arenas, typically for adolescents, that include learning and living on campus. Students reside in dormitories and then go to classes throughout the day, similar to the way most universities are set up. Students have many locations for common unity as well as classrooms to spend time together and get to know each other. Though coed students are educated together they do not generally share rooms or dormitories. They will however share other parts of life.

One social benefit of a coeducational school as compared to a gender segregated setting is that it is a better model of the real world. To be a functioning member of society it is very important that students learn to work with both genders. There is no doubting the fact that these two genders behave differently in some situations. They have various ways of handling work, conflict, etc. Learning what these variations are and how to work with them is a process that can only be learned by working together in settings where both genders are together and working equally toward a common goal. The experience offered by attending classes with both genders is very important to this development. Students who partake in platonic relationships with the opposite gender at this age have been known to lead much more psychologically healthy lives.

Even though platonic relationships have their advantages, being able to date at this stage is very important as well. When the girls and boys are together in one environment they can have practice relationships that will assist to develop stronger marriages later in life. This is necessary because these early relationships help to teach important skills for later ones. Eventually most people will marry or at least cohabitate in a long term commitment. Learning what sort of person you want to be with and how to handle conflict in a relationship will help to make these bonds stronger later in life.

Those who are able to meet more people through coed boarding schools while they are young are better overall psychologically. Being around boys and girls is one way that is variety can exist. Creating relationships whether platonic or dating with the opposite gender, throughout adolescence, is extremely important. Kids who reside in these types of academies are better equipped for the situations that they will find in their adult life. These are all important things for parents to think about when deciding between gender segregated and gender integrated academic settings.
