The Many Benefits Of Getting A Good Nights Sleep

by Dale Jenkins

Lack of sleep can be responsible for moodiness, less energy to fight off stress and unsightly dark circles under your eyes. When you cut your sleep short you're impeding your health. Your body needs sufficient down time to repair itself and that's exactly what it's doing while you sleep.

There's more to getting enough rest than how many hours you slept. Matter of fact you could sleep for nine hours and still feel tired. It's because you need quality sleep. It takes quality sleep to fully repair your body.

If you skimp out of a full seven hours of sleep you'll need to catch up by the next night. If you don't you'll experience lack of coordination and the inability to focus. Not to mention you'll instinctively nod off at any given chance. When you're first born you require up to thirteen hours of sleep. As you age you'll require less sleep. The average adult requires seven to nine hours of uninterrupted rest per night.

You probably already know about R.E.M. But did you know that there are four other very important stages to sleep that you can't skip? Matter of fact, if you interrupt these stages you're not getting a quality nights rest and may need to add a few hours to your rest time. It's very important for you to naturally go through the five stages of sleep. Each stage has it's purpose and to get a good nights rest you need to complete all of the stages.

There can be outside factors that affect your sleep too. Things like: alcohol, fitness, drugs and diet can affect the quality of your sleep. Alcohol can inhibit your sleep stages much like other drugs and if you work out you'll definitely get a sounder sleep. Things like junk food, which take out more nutrients than you receive, can be offset by vitamins. Alcohol can be somewhat offset by drinking water before going to bed. Just be aware that outside forces can affect your quality of sleep too.

Nodding off during the middle of the day or feeling like you have to nap, isn't normal. If you're feeling groggy during the middle of the day than you're probably sleep deprived. You'll need to figure out what's interrupting your sleep patterns and start to get a better nights rest.

Every time you wake up to use the bathroom and flick on a bright light you've just interrupted your sleep. The bright light will mess up your melatonin levels and prevent your body from getting a full nights rest. Something as simple as setting up low light night lights to guide you would prevent that process. There are some simple steps you can take to ensure a good nights sleep.

Getting the proper amount of sleep will help you with your overall mood, prevent unnecessary stress and improve your quality of life. Feeling tired during the middle of the day isn't normal and you don't have to feel that way. There are some really simple ways to improve the quality of sleep you get.
