What Are Novelty Contact Lenses?
Many people use contact lenses as a means to correct their vision problems, but contacts don't always need to have a corrective function to perform. Sometimes, wearing novelty contact lenses for special occasions or as part of a costume is a fun way to add some excitement. Novelty contact lenses are basically contacts with bright colors or designs on the lens to give your eyes a completely different appearance. Depending on the type of design or picture you have in your novelty contact lens, you can really throw your friends or family for a loop.
Halloween is one time when novelty contacts work well, as you can enhance just about any costume with a special design or look on the contact lens. A novelty contact lens won't do anything to improve your vision, as they are non-prescription. When you decide to try out novelty contact lenses, the main concern is to care for them properly, so you don't hurt your eyes in any way. Hygiene is the key to keeping your eyes safe and enjoying your novelty contact lenses as intended.
When you first insert novelty contact lenses, your eyes will react as if some foreign body has gotten in there. You will blink and possibly tear up, but as long as the contacts are clean you should be all right. The first thing to do to ensure cleanliness with your novelty contacts is to wash your hands thoroughly with a plain, non-perfume soap. Dry your hands with a lint-free type of towel afterwards, or simply let them air dry if you don't have such a towel available. Most novelty contact lens packs will come with a plastic case to clean the lenses in and a bottle of cleaning solution. The contact lenses themselves will be in a vial or other container. Before you position the novelty contacts in your eyes, you must fill each side of your plastic case with cleaning solution and set the contacts into the solution.
Set up a little area where you have a mirror, a solid counter or tabletop and adequate lighting. Sit down and remove the right contact lens from the case with your fingers. Set it on your index finger and look closely to ensure it isn't inside out. It should look like a bowl on your finger if it's right. From there, look directly in the mirror and insert the novelty contact as you would any other type of contact lens. Hold your top lid firmly open if you can't help blinking when the contact lens is inserted.
Take a look around once it's in to make sure it's on the right spot and you can see, and then repeat the procedure on the opposite side. If it feels gritty or irritated under the lens, try taking it out and rinsing it in solution again to wash any dust that may be underneath. With clean hands, place your index finger on the center of the contact lens and slide it downward as you move your chin up. Keep looking in the mirror the entire time.
If you follow the proper procedures, wearing novelty contact lenses should always be a fun time.
