When Your Baby Gets Older
When you first bring your baby home, there are a lot of changes. Your body is going through changes, you are hormonal, there are lots of adjustments there. I remember when bringing home my first baby, I was consumed with SIDS (sudden infant death syndrom). Needless to say, I didn't get a lot of sleep that first year. And just when you are settling into caring for your baby, something crazy and unexpected happens: She turns into a toddler!
Talk about a change up. Now, you have to run around your house like a crazy persond "babyproofing" the house. About this time it occurs to you that there are more hazzards in your house than safe places. Time to sell the house.
Before you get too crazy and actually list your house, take a deep breath. You can do this. The baby isn't going to get up and start running around the house with a pair of scissors tomorrow (that will come when she is 3). For now, start babyproofing the house in stages. Once your child hits the crawling stage, you want to be sure you have more safeguards in place. But really, it's the toddler years when safety becomes a huge concern. The first step to ensuring that your little one is out of danger is to set up a play space that is free from any and all potential hazards. For instance, using the Little Playzone to create an area where your child can roll around and dump out his toys and play will build independence while you begin to scout the house for potential danger areas. Then, you can start stocking up on toddler proofing gear lie these gadgets and tools.
Cabinet locks are one of the most important things that you can invest in. There are many different types of cabinets, and therefore, manufacturers have create many different types of cabinet locks. Be sure you read the details about how each one fits the kitchen or bathroom cabinet door to be sure you can properly install it. For instance, some require you to be able to attach a piece to the top panel inside a cabinet, which may be too tall in some set ups. Others use a magnetic key. This is where advice from friends or relatives that have recently had a toddler is really helpful.
Other things that can be done over time is to get rid of all plants that could be poisonous in ingested and lock up any and all medication that a toddler could get into. Stove knob protectors will be needed when the toddler starts standing up and protective edges for sharp corners is also important.
Don't fret, you will get through this trying time with your new toddler ~ we all have. Just take it a step at a time...you know, baby steps.
