What tactic can send your online sales from "flat" to "fat"?
The answer? Telemarketing!
I’m sure you’ve all had telemarketers call you. You hear the same old scripted response… “Hi, my name is John Doe calling from XYZ Company. Would you be interested in buying a $10,000 product right now?”
DON’T DO THAT!
People expect that from a telemarketer. They hear that and know that they’re being sold to. If you talk to them like they are human beings, I can assure you – they won’t instantly think “Telemarketer, must hang up.”
When I was learning about using NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) in my sales tactics, this particular method stood out. Not only was it new and interesting, but it worked!
If you’ve ever studied this yourself, you will know that there are 3 kinds of people. Auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory people respond better to works like talk, speak, hear, listen, discuss, and converse. Visual people respond better to works like see, look, and visualize. Kinesthetic people are emotional – they respond better to words like feel, touch, emotion, imagine, and happiness.
The trick is to appeal to all three kinds of people in your call script. For example:
“When you want XYZ Long Distance, how can you see yourself using the service? Would you talk more with friends and family? Would you feel less cautious about calling a long-distance number?”
That part of the script appeals to all three kinds of people – auditory (“talk more”), visual (“see yourself”), and kinesthetic (“feel less”).
Another very important part of this script is use of the word "when". Replacing the word "if" with the word "when" is an easy subliminal message to use on your prospects. Using the word "if" implies that a decision needs to be made. The word "when" does not.
Another important word in this script is "want". But this isn't just something to be used once... When writing an effective call script, you want to use one specific phrase over and over again that implies action. "You want" is a perfect example of this. It is not a direct action in itself, like run or walk. Rather, it implies that an action will be performed as a result of those words. Very powerful.
