We Don't Always Realize That God Is All We Need, Until God is All We Have

At some point in most every person's life, we feel a since of emptiness and may even wonder if this is all there is? We try to fill this void with all kinds of things - possessions, achievements, relationships etc. For a short while, we are able to numb or satiate that feeling of emptiness but in the end, it's temporary and we return to being unfulfilled with our lives. Sometimes in the desperation to fill up that void, we turn to toxic activities such as taking drugs, being promiscuous or even escaping from the feeling all together by committing suicide. We just seem to want more. We just don't have enough. We are not satisfied with what we have and what we are doing.

To make things worse, in the world that we live in, we are bombarded continuously with the mass media telling us that we need various items, that by buying their products, one can become more "beautiful", "classy" or just "cool". We fall for their traps and get tangled in the web of illusions and desires in the rush to become these "perfect" beings. We start to think that we can buy our happiness and joy. The sad truth is, we can't. As followers of Christ, we should look to Him for everything we need.

Philippians 3:7-8 states "But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ.."(NIV). Other translations of the Bible even use the term "dung" instead of "rubbish". Can you feel what Paul was trying to say? To Paul, everything that he had accomplished or everything that he had in possession was nothing compared to Christ. He found his joy, his peace and all the love that he needed, in Christ. The Lord our God, was all that he needed - nothing less and nothing more. How about us? Can we truly say that the Lord our God is enough for us?

It can be difficult to fully understand the joy and satisfaction that devout Christians feel. I myself struggle at times with my faith and must ward off feelings and thoughts of doubt and lack, Yet Jesus said that we are complete in him, meaning, he has provided us with everything we need to live a satisfying and fulfilling life on the earth. I have met people who are at peace with themselves and fulfilled because they know deep inside their hearts, that the Lord is enough for them. It takes time and perseverance to fully comprehend this but that's what Christianity is all about; it's a journey and at the same time, a relationship with our Lord. Through this journey, your friendship with Him will develop and you probably will go through trying times. No matter what, never give up because in life, Christ is all we need.

I knew a young man of 16 who lost his father a few years back. When I went to the wake, I met him there and had a short chat. I was amazed that he kept a smile on his face. I asked him how he was and he told me, "I don't know why this happened but what I know is that for me, God is enough. That's all I need to know".
