How to sharpen a lawn mower blade

by Jakob Jelling

There is an important reason by which you should sharpen your lawn mower blade: if you do not do so every now and then, the blade would not cut the grass as cleanly as it should and would start ripping it. When glass is not cut cleanly, it not only doesn’t look as good as when it is, but also has more receptive to diseases, being this way something that should be avoided.

Ideally, you should sharpen a lawn mower blade at least every two months, although it could be less often in case of using it in very small areas. But, before you start sharpening a lawn mower blade, there are several important guidelines you should know and follow in order to do the job as good as possible and avoid accidents as well. If you are not sure of how to do it and feel insecure, it is advisable to ask a professional for help.

The first thing you should do before sharpening a lawn mower blade is to make sure that the spark plug wire is removed. Never try to sharpen a lawn mower blade when its spark plug wire or any wire it might have are connected to the power source, or this could result in a serious injury. Once you have made sure of this, you will be ready to start with the sharpening work by following a few simple steps.

In order to be able to start sharpening the lawn mower blade, you should look for a wrench and with its help remove the nut that is placed against the deck and which holds the lawn mower blade. Your work will be very difficult or even impossible without doing this. Next, you should look for a file which has an appropriate shape and size for sharpening the blade. With the file, you should sharpen the blade following the angle of the cutting edge.

In case you have more than one blade, you should take them out in order and make sure of remembering where each one was placed, since they might have different sizes and it could become difficult to place them back once you finish. In this case, and after you finish placing the blades back in the mower, you should check if they are correctly refitted with the help of a balancer.
