DISH Network Is Expanding Its Extensive HD Channel Lineup

by Julia Hall

There is good news coming out of Englewood, Colorado these days if you are a fan of (HD) High-Definition television. For those of you who can’t get enough HD and find it hard to go back to (SD) Standard Definition TV after being spoiled by the stunningly deep, crisp images available with digital HD will be glad to hear this. EchoStar Communications Corp. has announced that its DISH Network satellite TV service has unveiled its new high-definition television package, named DishHD, with the most HD channels in the pay-TV industry. DISH Network is expanding its extensive HD channel lineup this year by adding five new original VOOM channels, bringing the total to 15, as well as other HD networks including ESPN2 HD and Universal HD. In addition to these great advances, DISH Network will begin to launch high definition local channels through its satellite service in up to 50 markets in this year, starting with Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York in February, and reaching more than half of U.S. TV households with local HD channels. DishHD will have a total of 25 national HD channels plus the local broadcast channels where available, providing more than 200 hours of HD programming every day. That is a lot of content! In addition, DISH Network satellite TV will offer ESPN2 HD, a 24-hour high-definition (HD) simulcast service of ESPN2, as part of the new "DishHD" programming package. ESPN2 HD will be available beginning Feb. 1, 2006. “We look forward to ESPN2 HD joining ESPN HD on DISH Network's line-up to enhance viewing for high-definition subscribers and sports fans across the country by providing viewers with the high-quality picture clarity and programming detail that only an HDTV signal can provide," said Ben Pyne, president, Disney and ESPN networks Affiliate Sales and Marketing. "DISH Network has a proven focus on high-definition television with its offer of a robust package of compelling high-definition content." "ESPN2 HD, with its popular sports coverage, further complements DISH Network's powerful line-up of HD programming," said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. "DISH Network is the nation's leader of HD programming and offers more HD channels than any other cable or satellite provider." Together, ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD will combine in 2006 to deliver over 600 major sports events -- 220 in just the first three months of 2006—all in high definition. The events telecast will include a variety of games from college football, the men's and women's softball College World Series, the Little League World Series, both men's and women's college basketball, the NBA, Major League Baseball, Monday Night Football from the National Football League, the Women's Final Four, the National Finals Rodeo, the National Hot-Rod Association, the NCAA Frozen Four (hockey championships) and the FIFA World Cup from Germany. "This is perfect timing for EchoStar to launch ESPN2 HD -- our hearty programming line-up consisting of 150 college basketball games in the first three months is remarkable," said Bryan Burns, vice president, Strategic Planning and Business Development, ESPN. "With over 6,500 hours of HD content slated for 2006 across both HD services, ESPN2 HD has clearly become a 'must have' in our fans' eyes." Customers are loving these changes; have you hugged your HDTV today?
