The Bachelor's Degree Requirement to Become a Teacher

by Jenifer Reid

If you wish to become a teacher in any state in the United States, there is a requirement for you to have a bachelor's degree. Texas is no different than other states. This requirement is present for many reasons, with the foundation being that you need to have a good level of education in order to teach others.

For those who are considering becoming a teacher, you may wonder about that degree requirement. What does it mean? Where does your degree need to come from? What limitations are there? Surprisingly, you may find that the requirements in Texas are far less demanding than you may expect.

Bachelor's Degree From Where?

The first thing to keep in mind is that your bachelor's degree needs to come from an accredited school. The state must recognize that the school that offers this degree has the credentials to do so. In short, they do not want just a degree from any place. They want a degree from a school that has the resources necessary to teach you.

They must meet specific requirements set forth by the state in order to hold the proper accreditation. If you are unsure if the school or university you attended has this accreditation, ask the school or teach with the state board of education for more information. Don't apply to a school without this if you hope to get your Texas teacher certification.

What Are You Studying?

The second question that many people have about the bachelor's degree requirement is what it needs to be in. The state of Texas does not have a formal list of courses you must complete specifically. You do not have to have a degree in education either. In fact, most Texas universities and colleges do not offer a blanket degree like this. Rather, what they are looking for is a more specialized schooling and education.

Your bachelor's degree should be in some area of academics. It should have a focus on the courses and the field work that you plan to do when you leave the school. If you plan to have your degree in science, for example, then you will need to take the appropriate courses for this specialization. Later, when you go through the testing for this field of study so that you can teach in this area, you will need to ensure you have the foundational knowledge to do so.

What about those who have a bachelor's degree in another field? The good news is that the Texas board of education offers opportunities here, too. You can work through an accelerated program to get your necessary teaching requirements. This will allow you to teach and work towards your license even if you do have not an original degree in academics (though you must have education at this level, from an approved school and work experience.)

Getting your bachelor's degree is step one. You will find that this process can take a few years to complete. Those who complete it are that much closer to getting their Texas teacher certification.
