How to Tell What's Ailing Your Toilet

by Nick Messe

Toilet problems happen to everyone from time to time. Most of the time, they are relatively simple plumbing repairs that a professional plumber can take care of quickly and inexpensively. So anytime you have a toilet repair issue and are not sure what the problem is, it is best to contact a professional, trusted plumber. They will get your toilet working at top notch again.

Still, there are certain things you can do to help you avoid unnecessary toilet repairs. When a problem does pop up, often times it is quite simple to determine what the problem is. If you can fix it yourself you can save you time and money without having to call the plumber. Here are a few common causes of toilet clogs and some tips for you to try.

If your toilet is clogged, the first thing you should do is turn on your bathroom sink. If the water drains out of the sink normally, then the clog is located within the toilet trap. This is good news because a clog in the toilet trap can often be solved without the help of a plumber, and even if it does require a plumbing repair it would be a pretty easy one for a good plumber to rectify. On the other hand, if the water drains slowly in the sink, then that would indicate a blocked sewer line, which is a more serious problem and one that you will certainly need a plumber for.

If you determine that it is just your toilet that is clogged, go ahead and try to remove the clog with a plunger. Often, a simple household plunger if used correctly will clear the clog and allow you to move on with your life. However, watch your toilet carefully. If the clog occurs again, you will need to contact a plumber to find the root of the problem and make the necessary plumbing repairs.

There are a few things you can do to help prevent those annoying toilet clogs in the first place. First of all, never throw any facial tissue or paper towel into your toilet. Unlike toilet paper, those things are not designed to dissolve. This means they will get stuck in your toilet trap and cause a clog.

Secondly, if you have children, keep an eye on them and make sure they don't play in the toilet. Toys can easily cause a clog and lead to unnecessary toilet repairs. Now, at some point it may be necessary to invest in a new toilet altogether. Not only is this not a bad thing, but it can actually be quite exciting.

Many new toilet models have some fantastic features that will amaze you. If you haven't shopped for a toilet in some time, you will be blown away by what some of the newer models can do. Some of them have self-cleaning features and other toilets come in special shapes or sizes to accommodate all types of people. Other fancy features include heated seats and automatic flushing.
