Philosophy of SEO Consulting
by Will Pritchard
Def. Search engine optimization (SEO) : A set of methodologies aimed at improving the visibility of a website in search engine listings. The term also refers to an industry of consultants that carry out optimization projects on behalf of client sites. However transparent a definition of SEO this might be, it does offer those readers who are new to the term a little reassurance that this is not brain science. It is also not entirely easy either. However, with more and more readily accesible information that is not only reliable but authoritative as well (we'll get to "authority" later) everyone from Ad Agency executives to the stay at home mom across the street want to know how it can help them get exposure on the web. There are many methodologies, philosophies, techniques and determinations to be looked at insofar as the SEO industry is concerned. SEO has indoctrinated good followers and bad followers. When learning the Search Engine Optimization trade, one must remain vigilant against charlatans, kooks and fly by night "Gurus". Whether you are planning to learn the trade and do your own SEO work, or hire a reputable firm or consultant there is an age old saying ... caveat emptor; "let the buyer beware".There are a few things to keep in mind here: * Not all people who claim to be SEO consultants are. Be sure to check client references, ask pointed questions about their techniques. Research their background. Google is one of the best tools to do this, just find the firm or individuals name and "Google It" * Be an informed consumer. You do not need to know how to program HTML, understand the intricacies of PHP or be able to script ASP.NET on the fly to be an informed consumer in this field. Read some of our articles on this site, search Google, visit SEOChat, talk to the community, ask questions, read whitepapers. Spend 2 hours educating yourself in SEO methodologies before you rush out and change your sight or fork over hundreds, or maybe thousands of dollars to an individual or firm to be disappointed with the results. * There are no quick fixes, guaranteed ranking or guaranteed traffic rates. Period. Ever. If someone promises this to you be very weary of how they plan to do this and be sure the company or individual is not engaging in unethical tactics to boost your rankings. What may sound like a great idea can get your site penalized or even banned because of unethical tactics.
