Responsible Service of Alcohol Training Online In Australia

by James Knight

The Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) training can be delivered online or in person by Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). Once upon a time training could be delivered only via face-to-face courses. Now, as with a lot of things, there's an online option too. Online training can offer benefits such as, a faster transaction, the ability to train anywhere at any time and the convenience of being able to mange your own time or go at your own pace. In person training meanwhile, is still helpful and relevant for those who aren't confident with a computer, don't want to put their credit card information online or simply prefer a face-to-face learning environment.

RTOs are able to offer both modes of RSA training after rigorous auditing and accreditation processes. Every Australian state and territory has different RSA certification requirements but generally, an RTO has to be authorised by every state or territory's liquor governing body individually. The National Training Information Service (NTIS) keeps a public record, available online, of accredited RTOs and what they're authorised to deliver. For instance, an RTO might be accredited to deliver the 'Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol' unit of competency and be authorised by Queensland's Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) to deliver the Queensland RSA training and subsequent certificate - meaning if you required an RSA certification to work in Queensland, this would be the training provider for you.

The 'Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol' unit of competency is either wholly or partially an RSA certification Australia-wide, depending on the state or territory you're to work in. In Western Australia, for example, all staff selling or serving alcohol must complete the nationally accredited unit of competency 'Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol', which is the required RSA training for WA. While in South Australia, approved managers or supervisors of a licensed venue must be an 'approved responsible person'. And part of this process includes proof of undertaking training, which completing the unit of competency falls under.

In the Northern Territory, similarly to WA, the nationally accredited RSA training 'Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol', unit of competency is what the Licensing Commission requires all liquor industry staff to have completed. To complete your RSA certification in Victoria you can do face-to-face training with an approved Victorian trainer, or complete the national unit of competency followed by the Victorian Government's free online refresher course.

The national unit of competency is also recognised as an RSA certificate in the Australian Capital Territory. And in Queensland it's' essential your RSA training and subsequent certificate is provided by an OLGR approved trainer.

In Western Australia, Queensland, the Northern Territory, Tasmania, New South Wales and Victoria all staff involved in the sale or service of alcohol are required to have an RSA certificate.
