Doing Quests Vs. Running Dungeons: The Best Way To Level In WoW
Copyright (c) 2013 Brandon Devin
For the majority of people playing World of Warcraft, there are two primary ways that you can progress and advance in the game: you can either do quests across the different zones of the game, or you can queue up for dungeons. Let's take a look today and see which method is better (and faster!) for getting your toon to the max level.
What Kind of Toon Are You?
This is very important. With the way the game is currently laid out, you can queue for a dungeon run a lot more quickly if you're a tank or healer spec. If you're regular DPS (ranged or magic), the queues are considerably longer (sometimes 10-15 minutes versus 30 seconds for a tank or healer). This can, obviously, severely dampen your hopes to quickly level unless you have a group of 4 others that can run the dungeons with you.
If you've made the choice to join a guild, you can normally find at least two other players at your level to do a couple of runs with you. This benefits you because you can queue more quickly, and it benefits the guild in the form of extra gold for the guild's bank that results from a "guild run" on a dungeon. (That's at least 3 players from one guild in a dungeon run.)
What Do You Enjoy?
A lot of new WoW players enjoy questing through the various zones and reading the storylines that Blizzard created. On the other hand, if this is your fourth or fifth toon, you might already know the entire story of Westfall and you could be sick of trying to get the bugged Mountain Ettin of Red Ridge to move the bolder. For these players, running through a dungeon several times, especially one that you're familiar with, is a lot more fun than running all over a zone to do quests.
Doing Professions?
If you're doing gathering professions (herbalism, mining, and/or skinning), you need to at least explore the outside world. You can queue for the dungeons while you're exploring and gathering, and this will help to maximize your XP gain. Once you hit level 60+, you can start to do some of your gathering in the dungeons, but it's a lot easier to gather ore and flowers out in the world proper.
The Most Effective Strategy
When all factors have been weighed, a good hybrid strategy is really the best way to level up your Warcraft character. Once you get to level 15 and gain the ability to queue for dungeons, you will be in zones where there are "quest hubs." That is, you won't get just one quest. Most of the time, you'll get anywhere from 4 quests to as many as 10-12 at a time. The majority of players will queue up as many quests as possible, turn on their gathering map, and then queue for a dungeon run as well.
As you can see, leaving out questing entirely or randoms entirely is not the way the game was designed to be played. Take advantage of all the XP you can, grab some BoAs for bonuses, and enjoy the ride to your toon's max level.
