Various Monitor Lizards
Monitor lizards are members of the family Varanidae. The largest lizard in the world is the Komodo Dragon and it is a member of this family as well. Monitor lizards are carnivorous and over the years they have become very well adapted at doing so.Savannah MonitorThe Savannah Monitor is probably one of the most well known monitor lizards. They naturally live in the hot Savannah desert in Africa so they are adapted to very hot conditions.Savannah Monitors do make good pets but they are very large so consideration must be taken into building them an appropriate enclosure. They can grow up to 5 feet in length which means you will probably need to dedicate an entire room to keeping one. Without enough room to move around they will not get enough exercise and can become stressed easily. Also they eat large prey so you will need to be prepared to obtain and store this kind of food for a Savannah Monitor. In the wild it eats anything from worms and small insects to other lizards and birds. These lizards have a venom which collects around their teeth. When they bite into their prey the venom seeps in.Nile MonitorNile Monitors grow even larger than the Savannah Monitor as they can grow up to 7 feet. The Nile Monitor can be found around the Nile river in Africa as their name suggests.Nile Monitors are often kept as pets but they are so large that it makes it difficult for most people to find a large enough enclosure to keep them in. These lizards also like to soak their entire body in water which means that if you want to keep one as a pet you are going to need to provide them with a large water bowl. They are relatively hardy lizards which does ease the work in caring for them. When keeping Nile Monitors as pets you must be very carefull with them as they are extremely powerful animals. They can bite down very hard so never hand feed these lizards. It is almost impossible to tame these lizards when they are brought in from the wild. On the other hand, if it has been in captivity all of its life and handled reasonably it is possible for it to be tamed to some extent.Komodo DragonThe Komodo Dragon is an absolutely massive lizard that can grow to me 10 feet in length. On the islands in Indonesia in which they are found naturally they are the top predator and dominate all animals below them mainly due to their shear size. They have hardened scales that range in color from dark red to dark grey.
