You need to determine how much weight, what sorts of items, and how often you will need the dumbwaiter to lift.

Dumbwaiters come in a variety of sizes. Many will lift up to 500 pounds, as a standard weight. So, if you are planning to transport more weight, then obviously you will need a larger dumbwaiter, or perhaps a residential elevator. If you are simply planning to use the dumbwaiter to transport goods such as groceries, firewood, or laundry, then a standard sized dumbwaiter will perfectly suit your needs. Space, however, is a major consideration also. If you are planning to only transport small loads, then you will get by perfectly with a small sized dumbwaiter, and you can save the expense and space barrier of the larger models.

Many models come standard that run on a 120V electrical current, however, some people opt to save on their electric bill, as well as the dumbwaiter’s cost, by installing a manually driven dumbwaiter.

You should also consider which rooms in your home you need the dumbwaiter to be installed in. If you will primarily be using it for laundry transport, then optimally you will have it installed in the laundry room, and heading directly upwards from there. Choosing the main room for the dumbwaiter first, and then ultimately the landing, will help you in the overall process. If you are using it mostly for transporting food, then having it installed in your kitchen would be best. From the initial installation spot, the dumbwaiter will then be installed upwards, so if you have a hallway above your kitchen or laundry room, it will lead to that spot. Knowing what is above your room of choice is also important. You will need to ensure that there is adequate room above for the installation to be done.

While cost is an important factor, it is less important overall than the functionality and convenience of the installation. If you have your dumbwaiter installed in a spot that is not beneficial, then you are simply throwing your money away. Dumbwaiters take much stress and worry off people with disabilities, and those who care for disabled or immobile family members. Having a dumbwaiter installed is a wonderful way to help with the day to day living of those who need added mobility. Determining ahead of time where it should be installed, and the exact size and function that you need, will help you to enjoy the dumbwaiter in the long run.
