Vacuum Cleaners: Should The Bagless Vacuum Cleaners Like Dyson Be Considered?

by Claude Whitacre

I am not a Dyson vendor. This is a real assessment.

Initially all vacuum cleaners were bagless. All vacuum cleaners only used a cloth dirt bag to contain the particles and dirt and filth. They leaked airborne dirt and dust and odors, but they were a lot better than using nothing at all. Then paper liners were introduced to dramatically cut down on the dirt.

The paper bags were a enormous step up because they cut down on the odors kept in the cloth outer container, and the filth and dirt could be thrown away with no dust cloud forming around the vacuum.

Roughly 1985 the bagless vacuum grew to become prevalent. First, bagless vacuum cleaners had a marked advantage over bagged vacuum cleaners.

The HEPA filtration system that all bagless vacuum cleaners need stops very nearly all the dirt and odors from leaking out the vacuum exhaust. The excellent news was that the HEPA filters stopped dirt from spewing out.

The awful news is that the bagless filters clogged up fast. They clogged more rapidly if the air had high dampness or if you were picking up family pet hair. The puppy dander sticks to the filtration system and retards air movement. The slowing air movement is also what cooled the motor.

The motors in bagless vacuums tend not to last as long as bagged vacuum cleaners because of this restricted airflow to the motor in bagless vacuum cleaners.

We now have a retail business selling vacuum cleaners and filters in Wooster Ohio. The two most important reasons people ask us about bagless vacuum cleaners is: 1) The customers want to save money on paper bags, or 2) The customers want less dirt.

Bagless vacuums similar to the Dyson, use a HEPA filter to impede the dirt. These filters are very effective. They also really need to be discarded at the least yearly (more often if you have small kids or pets) and, they aren't low-cost, $29 - $59 each one.

It's impracticable to spend as much for paper bags. High filtration paper bags can cost you a buck or two apiece. You will run through less money on the bags than for the bagless filters, even though you exchange the bags frequently.

Not as much dirt?

Do you utilize rubbish cans at home? Do you use rubbish can liners? Why? Because it's more sanitary if you throw out the liner instead of dumping the container with all the dirt being dispersed into the air.

Almost all high end vacuum cleaners at present use micron filtration bags along with a HEPA filter at the exhaust of the vacuum. The micron filtration bags offer first-rate filtration, and they will not clog up and impede airflow like the HEPA filters in bagless vacuum cleaners. The HEPA filter at the exhaust takes much longer to get sullied as the dirt and pet hair is trapped in the high filtration paper liner.

Not as costly vacuum cleaners are very nearly all bagless. The revenue is in the filters, not the disposable vacuums. The higher end vacuum cleaners very nearly all use high filtration inner bags.

The exclusion to this is the Dyson. It is a very well designed vacuum that's not low-cost. Starting at about $399, dyson vacuums are the top of the line in bagless vacuum cleaners.

If you own pets, the dog and cat dander is what sticks to the bagless HEPA filters. We also suggest to dog and cat owners that they use a vacuum with a charcoal filtration system to entrap and neutralize the puppy odors.

Additionally, natural fiber brushes on your vacuum's roller brush will not ensnare the pet hair in the roller.

We trust these thoughts help you.
