What are your kids hiding from you?

by Shawn Parker

Don't be afraid to go through your children's' room or any items they have in your house. The determination of kids to conceal their drugs use is limitless. Parents need to be on the front lines, if they want to protect their children from drug use.

Retired and current officers are sharing any new terminology and street names of drugs in a new crash course with parents. On the Newark campus of Ohio State University a seminar was conducted to inform parents of the illicit drug use. Mint tins, candy bags, pop bottles, aerosol spray can, pens, many household cleaners, were among ever day items that wouldn't raise any concern on their own. All are potential hiding places were illegal drugs could be hid.

The program was developed to help educators, law-enforcement officers, health-service professional and mostly parent to understand that there're hundreds of different ways to hide drugs. They can put pills into hollowed out lip balm and lipstick containers, to using common house products to try have their drug of choice go un-detected.

The presented the attendees with a myriad of new ways the young people are getting high on. Many of what they are using are not illegal yet, an example would be kratom, an opiatelike plant that comes from Thailand. The sheriff's Lt. Steven Tucker said, "the legislation just can't keep up."

The program was started about eight years ago according to Lt. Tucker. The reason for the program was because children were talking a different language with it came to speaking about drugs. Undercover narcotics officers were asked to share their knowledge of the slang words used when talking about drugs. This is how Operation: Street Smart got started.

Lt. Tucker said the drug culture changes so fact, that parents need to be aware of the signs of drug use. No matter what drug they use the signs are the same, a drop in grades and a sudden change in their friends are sure signs that a parent needs to start inquire about what is going on in their child's life.

More and more programs are needed to keep parents informed about what their children a doing. It's their duty to try to keep their children safe and away from the use of any drug.
