The Notable Differences Between Leather, Suede And Nubuck

by Jamie Simpson

Women's boots come in all different colours and materials. Three timeless materials are leather, suede, and nubuck. How can you decide which one will work best for your lifestyle? First, it is important to know what each of these materials are; and what you plan on wearing your boots for. Here is a short guide to leather, suede, and nubuck, so you can make an informed decision.

Both suede and nubuck are types of leather. But what exactly is leather? Leather refers to an animal pelt which has been tanned (chemical and mechanical process to eliminate perishables) and turned into a textile. In simple terms, it is animal skin that has been made soft and clean in order to make clothes, accessories, or shoes out of. Nubuck is similar to suede, but is made from the outside of the hide whereas suede is made from the inside. Nubuck is more wear-resistant and tough than suede, and therefore a little more expensive. Suede is a little thinner and softer. Suede comes from the inside of the pelt and nubuck is from the grain (or outside), nubuck has to be roughed up or sanded to give it that "furry" velvet feel that suede naturally has. Both suede and nubuck look similar, while leather has a slick feel to it. All three have their advantages and disadvantages. And I personally like the look of all three. So how do you choose one?

It is important to know what you are purchasing boots for. If you are purchasing boots just to go out to bars and clubs, then pick the ones that look the best! However, if you know you are bringing them on vacation, or wearing them to the office, you may have to plan on rain. Patent and slick leather boots are fairly rain resistant (although I wouldn't suggest standing in a puddle for an extended amount of time), but nubuck and suede should be kept away from water, rain or snow as the slightest bit will discolour them. You can buy rain protectant to spray on them, but honestly it is best not to wear them in bad weather period. They are super warm on your legs, but still wearing them in the snow is not advised.

Horseback riding boots should not be suede or nubuck. They should be slick leather that is made for outdoor activities. Suede and nubuck are much harder to clean than leather is. Keep this in mind while doing activities outdoors! As previously stated, all three of these materials may be treated to be weather-resistant, but in order to retain the velvety feeling of suede and nubuck it is best to try and avoid harsh elements such as rain, snow or mud. A spray on protectant treatment is advised though just to be safe!

All of these materials can be dyed and coloured just about any colour one desires, so pick the ones that fit, and that you think look good. Take care of them and they will last you a long time!
