Basement Waterproofing Keeps Your Basement Dry And Livable

by Jason Lom

Statistics from insurers show that claims filed for water damage are increasing throughout the country. This is no surprise. With the increased frequency of hurricanes, tornadoes, and other heavy rain storms, flooding is becoming more and more of a problem. When the heavy rain comes, basements are the area of the home most often affected, and basement waterproofing before the storms arrive can keep your lower level safe and dry.

There are actually a number of reasons for homeowners to consider basement waterproofing. Not only does it insure that your home stays dry when the floods hit your neighborhood, but it can also protect you against some very expensive repairs and replacements, as well as maximize the living space in your home.

Some people have the mistaken belief that if they have a flood in their basement, their homeowner insurance policy will pick up the tab to repair the damage and replace the valuables. While every homeowner policy is different, there is one thing that they do not include in their basic coverage; flood insurance. If your house is damaged by flooding from a major storm, in most cases you are only covered if you purchased an additional flood insurance policy from the National Flood Insurance Program.

Sure, there are some storms that are so bad they are declared disasters, in which case you may qualify for emergency government aid. But do you really want to take that gamble with your home? Flood insurance is expensive and the chances of getting disaster aid are minimal. To protect your lower level, the wisest decision is to do basement waterproofing long before the danger of a major storm arises.

When you get your basement waterproofed, you are taking a wise preventative step to protect all your valuables you have stored downstairs. Remember, your lower level floods and your personal property is destroyed, many of the items you have may be irreplaceable because they are antiques or family heirlooms. How much is it worth to you to have the peace of mind of knowing your valuables are protected.

Another good reason to consider basement waterproofing for your home is that it makes your lower level more functional and livable. If you have a basement that is damp and full of moisture, it's often very difficult to imagine using this space for anything important. Most often, people just store some stuff down there and maybe have a laundry room and/or an additional bathroom.

But what if you could be sure that your basement would stay dry even in the face of the worst storms? Wouldn't you look at that space downstairs a little differently? Suddenly, you would start to imagine the possibilities of remodeling your basement and fixing it up into maybe another living area or a home office. This would expand your living area and make your home more valuable when it comes time to put it on the market.

So, with all the advantages to waterproofing your basement, I guess the only remaining question is whether you want to do it yourself or hire a basement waterproofing contractor. That of course depends on your individual circumstances-your budget, handiness, expertise, etc. But if you do decide on a basement waterproofing company, make sure you find a reputable one that is well established and respected by the community.
