The Dangers Of Drunk Driving

by Levi Quinn

There is a time in every person's life when you need to make a judgment call that could save your life or the life of another person on the road. Most people can identify when they have had one too many drinks and all of us know that we should never get behind the wheel of a car after drinking alcohol. However, too many people do and this is the reason millions of people are hurt and killed every year by driver's who shouldn't have been behind the wheel of a car.

Drinking alcohol comes with responsibility and as a driver it means that you must be able to know that either you say "no thanks" to that alcoholic beverage or you make sure you have a designated driver. It's easy to say, "sure I'll have another" and to think about the consequences of your actions later on. But know that these actions could put you or someone else in the hospital, in jail, or worse.

Currently, every state plus Washington D.C. has a law in place regarding drunk driving. Recently, many jurisdictions have increased penalties associated with drivers who break these laws and some areas even have no tolerance laws. That means, if you have one drink and get pulled over, you could get arrested. While you may think you are fine to drive after a couple drinks, the truth is, even one drink impairs your motor skills and your judgment. One drink has the ability to hamper your vision, make you have slower hand eye coordination and even raise your blood alcohol level to an illegal level. Furthermore, the cost of getting caught is something that you just cannot afford.

In some states, a DUI comes with mandatory jail time and almost all states have fines that amount to thousands of dollars. Combine that with the fact that you also will have to hire an attorney to represent you, the spike that will be experienced in car insurance cost, and the time that you will probably have to invest in public service for your crime. Face it, driving drunk is simply not worth it. A few drinks are not worth a few thousand dollars and loss of respect. Therefore, if you want to drink, do it safely and legally.

First, always have a designated driver. This is someone who doesn't have sip of alcohol all night. It could be someone you have asked to drop you off and pick you up at a party or it could be someone who simply knows it's "their turn."

If you cannot find a DD, get the number of a cab company, plug it into your cell phone and make sure you have money to pay the fare at the end of the night. A $20 dollar cab ride can save you a world of hurt later on.

Finally, if you are the person throwing a party or entertaining, insist drinkers turn over their keys at the door or arrange for transportation. A responsible person makes sure their friends are responsible too and this means preventing anyone who drinks from getting behind the wheel of their car at the end of the night. You will not only be protecting your friend's life, but also the lives of other drivers on the road.
