Running Tips - When To Use A Treadmill
When you mention treadmill running - you will get different responses from different runners. Some runners absolutely hate the treadmill and will do whatever they have to do to avoid using one. Others love using a treadmill. Whether you love it or hate it - there are some times when treadmill running is the smart way to get your run in for the day. Read on to find out a few of the main times that you should hit the machine rather than the roads.
One of the major times that runner's should consider the treadmill is when the weather is not cooperative. If it's icy outside - that's a major time to come inside. You could lose your footing - or an oncoming car could slide into you. Another thing to remember regarding ice - is if you normally run in the early morning or the evening when it may be dark. There may be icy patches that you can't see that could be potentially dangerous to you. So, to me, icy outside means running inside.
Another time that you should think about running on a treadmill is if you are traveling - especially for business. During vacation, you have the time to check out areas to run and can usually run during the daylight so that you can see your surroundings. When I'm on a business trip and have early morning meetings, I'll usually head to the fitness center. This is especially true if I don't know the area or if I do know the area and really don't feel safe running there. On a side note, when I make hotel reservations I always make sure that they have a treadmill - just to make sure!
If you find yourself fighting or recovering from an injury is another time that you should be running on a treadmill. Treadmills provide you with a firm surface for running - but are easier on your legs and joints than concrete or asphalt. Some treadmills even talk about a shock reduction of 30-40% over running on the roads. If I find myself fighting some little glitch - I'll always head downstairs to my treadmill.
Even though you may be a runner who detests the treadmill - and I most certainly would rather run outside - there are times when you should run on one. The biggest reasons are for safety and to prevent or to help recover from any injury. A treadmill can help you to keep running for many years to come.
