Soccer - Arsenal Looks to Challenge in the 2007 Soccer Season

by James Murray

In this year's soccer season to compete with Manchester United and Chelsea, Arsenal must fight hard if they want to improve on last year’s poor finish in fourth place according to the statements of William Gallas.

"In the past we have relied too much on lovely football to see us through," William Gallas said, "But we have learned from last season. Sometimes you have to fight to achieve success. Some people have claimed this club is on a downward spiral. But there is an enormous determination to put things right. Last season we were behind the leaders too early. We can't let that happen again.”

Midfielder Cesc Fabregas is the one player that wants to help, and who definitely knows how not to quit fighting for success. Fabregas has played extremely well for Arsenal and even with Thierry Henry's departure to Barcelona, but Fabregas has been given the opportunity to showcase his talents and shine. Fabregas chose to stay with Arsenal even though Madrid wanted him there.

Fabregas believes that Arsenal can play and compete against United, Chelsea and even Liverpool while many people do not. Freddie Ljungberg a former player believes that Arsenal cannot play and compete because of the loss of so many soccer players but Fabregas believes otherwise saying, "While I respect the opinions of Henry and Ljungberg, I believe this team can fight for the title."

"What I say is not madness. We got to the Champions League final in 2006, often playing without players like Henry, Ljungberg and Ashley Cole."

Fabregas is an emotional soccer player and definitely wants to win, and sometimes his emotional displays can be too much. "I have matured very much over the last two years and I am prepared to be the leader of the team. Maybe then people won't ask me any more about becoming the next Patrick Vieira.”

"I would love to captain Arsenal. It is a matter of enormous pride to me because the fans are always with me and that support is very valuable. I know how the fans suffer when we lose,” Fabregas said.

In the Premier League this season, Arsenal is definitely a long shot to win. The favorites will be Manchester United and Chelsea while Arsenal have their work cut out for them if they want to compete for the Championship in 2007.
