How to Protect Your Photos

by Gosvami Divedi Purmanun

As a photographer you invest tons of money in equipment and spend large sums on traveling, so you can capture those breathtaking images. However, when you share your work on internet it is exposed to the risk of piracy and plagiarism. There is a way to prevent blatant copying of your photos, and in this post we will tell you all about it.

You can prevent people from copying your photos without your express permission, by placing watermarks on them. No one will want to use watermarked images, and they will be compelled to seek your permission and request for a watermark-free copy of the photo they desire to use.

Now, a watermark can be a line of text, an image or a combination of text and images. And, it should be placed such that it is impossible for anyone to crop-out the watermarked portion of the photo.

Generally, photographers add the copyright symbol before their name and use it as watermark. However, if you have a logo then you may modify it a little to serve as watermark. By convention, watermarks are grey and appear diagonally across the center of a photo. Or, you can place it directly over the main subject in the photo. But make sure that the watermark is not too dark or too bright as this will really spoil your photos. A watermark with an opacity value set to around 15 to 20 percent should be just fine.

Desktop apps like Kestrel GX lets you watermark your photos with ease. The software lets you configure your watermark once and for all, so it can be applied to your photos with a click of the mouse.

Watermarking makes your photos unfit for copy-paste piracy, however it doesn't guarantee that your photos won't be copied. So, if you wish to make your photos copy-proof then you may consider subscribing to Digimarc.com.

Digimarc.com adds invisible watermarks to your photos, and lets you search for websites and blogs that have copied your photos so you can punish the plagiarists.

This post was intended for photographers who wish to prevent unauthorized use of their photos. We don't say that it is necessary to watermark your photos or subscribe to a service that helps check piracy and plagiarism. Protecting one's digital property is purely a matter of personal preference, and it is absolutely fine if you don't want to copy-protect your photos.
