If you're a first-time buyer or on a limited budget, you'd be forgiven for thinking your chances of being able to afford a new home in Scotland were pretty slim. Of course, if you dream of a huge mansion with indoor swimming pool and the like then you'll have to splash a bit more cash, but for those starting out there are a number of new-home developments targeted at people looking to get their foot on the first rung of the property ladder. Furthermore, they don't require you to sign up to a shared equity arrangement, part-buy/part-rent deal or any other initiative usually associated with affordable new homes. And they're not all one-bedroom cubby holes either!

Only ten miles away from Glasgow and with gyms, fitness centres, restaurants and the Braehead shopping centre close by, Bellway Homes' Ainslie Square development in Renfrew is perfect for professional couples. Prices start from £95,995 would buy an apartment that has open-plan living and dining as well as open-plan kitchen with a bathroom and two bedrooms. Situated in the small Ayrshire town of Stevenston, Persimmon Homes' Ailsa Gardens development features a selection of two-bedroom cottage apartments.
