For any beginner, mastering the guitar scales is the first step of learning to play the guitar. Scales are a series of musical notes usually beginning and ending on an octave, which are played in an ascending or descending order. Guitar scales are diverse and varied – each with its own set of musical notes, playing patterns and unique musical characteristics. Playing these scales, a beginner gets acquainted with all the notes and the entire playing range of guitar. Though repeated practice of the scales can be tad boring, it helps a newcomer get familiar with the notes of a guitar and improves his hand-eye coordination.

Western music has several scales, each with its unique characteristics. But the most common guitar scales are the Major scale and the Minor scale. The Minor scale is again divided into three types- the natural minor, the harmonic minor and the melodic minor scale. But consisting of five notes, the pentatonic scales are the easiest to play and a good way to start learning the guitar. Pentatonic scales have a major and a minor scale.

Most people begin learning the guitar scales with the Major scale. Considered as the most basic guitar scale in western music, the Major scale is an important scale which is applicable to most styles of music. It is composed of seven notes with an additional eighth note, which is the duplicate of the first note but in a higher octave. The first note is called the root of the scale while the last note is called the octave of the scale. Every scale is named after its first note. So, a scale with a notation of C D E F G A B C would be a C Major scale. The formula of a major scale is: W W H W W W H, where W means whole step and H means half step.

While the Major scale has a bright quality, the Minor scale is of a darker quality. The natural Minor scale follows a formula: W H W W H W W. The notation of an A natural minor scale would be: A B C D E F G A. Yet among all the other guitar scales, the most important scale from a beginner’s point of view is the pentatonic scale. A very popular scale used by guitarists of all genres, its five notes allows it to produce a variety of sound. The pentatonic major scale follows a formula: W W (W+H) W (W+H), while the pentatonic minor scale has a formula: (W+H) W W (W+H) W. With only five unique positions, this is the best scale to begin with and can be played in several patterns.
