Drug Rehab Requirement: A Source Of Help

by Ericka Lopez

Many drug dependence cases are usually left untreated until a violation of the law occurred which resulted from use of prohibited drugs and alcohol. In the US, this is called a drug rehabilitation requirement. When a person is found to have in his possession illicit drugs, treatment may be suggested by the court as part of the penalty. Driving under the influence of alcohol is regarded as the leading causes of getting into drug rehab requirement.

The judge may issue a community order or a suspended sentence order to a person who has been caught with possession of prohibited drugs or who has been driving under the influence of alcohol. The earlier orders mentioned would determine the length of treatment as stated in the courtroom order. Usually, those who've been given a community order are to undergo therapy up to three years while those under suspended sentence order have lower therapy span of up to two years. Once the court has issued these orders, the person is left without a choice or face the charges of the law. Although unwilling, these individuals will sign an agreement and will be under the supervision of an officer in the Probation Service. This person will explain the facts of the treatment process and will be there during regular monitoring of the individuals alcohol or drug blood content.

Along with a responsible officer in charge on probation is another point person involve in the treatment process. Drug treatment programs have staff that assists individuals who are under a court order for treatment. These two personnel will help the addict in reaching the goal of a drug-free and productive life. This is a package of support and care that would allow the drug addict to move on with life and be a law offender no more. However, some drug users after probation are still under methadone medication depending on the severity and need.

Although drug rehabilitation requirement is not a voluntary act but many drug and alcohol abusers have benefited from this type of solution by the judicial system. Considering therapy for many drug abusers is difficult and painful. The requirement imposed by the law pushes the limits of an abuser in going to drug treatment programs. This is a better option than going to jail because it does not confine an individual in an enclosed cell with no opportunities. Teens and young adults are often given this requirement to modify their life's course and direct them to a better way of living.
